Your textbook states the following:  “Organizational culture is a system of shared assumptions, values, and beliefs that helps individuals understand which behaviors are and are not appropriate within an organization. Cultures can be a source of competitive advantage for organizations. Strong organizational cultures can be an organizing as well as a controlling mechanism for organizations.”  And, although not discussed in detail in ch. 10, strategic human resource management (SHRM) is not just a function of the HR department—all managers and executives need to be involved because the role of people is so vital to a company’s competitive advantage. SHRM tailors recruitment to select those individuals who fit with the company culture.

One of the most recent sexual harassment scandals in the news involved the former Governor of New York, Andrew Cuomo. The allegations against the former governor included the accusation of a “toxic workplace environment – culture.”  Many wonder how could things go so far and nothing was done to address the concerns of those who felt harassed.  What can be done in the workplace to address issues of sexual harassment and toxic environments? How were inappropriate behaviors addressed or not?

For this discussion, in addition to reading chapter 10, you must view the youtube video on sexual harassment included in this DB. The link to the video is also available in Module 10: Ch. 10. address the following:

– Please discuss the following:

1. How is an organization’s culture shared in an organization?  How are appropriate behaviors and values communicated?

2. What steps can an organization take to address issues of sexual harassment and toxic cultures/environments in the workplace?  Be specific and list at least two (2).

3. Have you ever participated in any sexual harassment training in your workplace?  If so, please share your views, e.g., was it effective, etc.
