The Opinion Article asks you to flex your creativity and make choices based on the writing approach you think best fits your chosen publication, its audience needs, and your overall purpose. This means there are a variety of approaches you can take, which also means that looking at any one example of an Opinion Article may be difficult because this is not a “one size fits all” type of assignment. Our History is Much Darker Than Racist Mascots,” by Rory Taylor, published on Vox: In this article, the author uses first-person to tell a personal story that connects to the larger issue of pro sports and their mascots. His angle, that Indigenous peoples’ history in the NFL has largely been as mascots rather than actual people, includes historical support, compelling appeals, and a fresh perspective that may be new to many readers. “How to Fall Asleep,” by Adryan Corcione, published on Teen Vogue: In this article, Corcione take the larger topic of sleep deprivation in teens and provides practical advice for readers. Taking a problem-solving or “how to” approach is an option for an Opinion Article.
