A voice-over IP phone system – Converging Technologies for AV

Paper details: Converging Technologies for AV Coursework Objectives • Develop a networked AV product • Demonstrate an understanding of the principles of transfer of audio and video signals across networks • Demonstrate and document your AV product Background In groups of 2 or three you are to develop a working networked AV system. The remit for this is broad and can encompass systems that use networks to transmit the following types of data (or combinations of) • Control • Audio • Video The system however must include • The transmission of data over networks • Evidence of system development, not just repurpose the work of others It is expected that the system will be based on the work of others including your own (this work must be fully acknowledged), but your developed system must show some measure of originality, e.g. utilise different input interactions or communicate by a different means to other systems. 1 Tasks In carrying out the coursework you will have to do the following: • Form groups of 2 or 3 • Devise a name for the group • Research appropriate AV networking examples • Design a networked AV system • Give a brief interim presentation in week 8 • Develop a networked AV system • Informally demonstrate the developed system working with a pre-recorded video overview • Document the developed system in an online blog o Each week you should be updating the blog with details of the activities carried out that week e.g. possible ideas, research areas, system designs o This is to demonstrate that you are engaging with the development steadily through the time allocated o You are expected to post each week about the development, NOT post details just at the end Formative Assessment In week 8 you will be asked to give a short informal presentation about your idea and will be provided with immediate feedback regarding the scope and feasibility of your idea. Summative Assessment There are four components of the assessment : • A developed system • A blog detailing the work carried out • A video overview of the system • A final demonstration of the system 2 Developed System You will design and build an AV network system that is capable of working and being demonstrated in in M329. (This means that you have to take into account the real world capabilities and restrictions of the networks and computers in M329.) The developed system should demonstrate the transfer of a range of data types across network(s) including control data, audio and video where appropriate. There should be evidence of extensive development which could include the integration of a range of systems including for example games engines, external servers, etc if appropriate. It is assumed that the system will be based on the work of others including yourself (which must be explicitly acknowledged in the documentation). Marks will be awarded for clear evidence of originality and synthesis which again must be explicitly mentioned in documentation, e.g. taking the work of more than one source and blending them appropriately. The system should evidence of being scalable again if appropriate. Demonstration Each demonstration should start with a 2-3 minute pre-recorded video (see below for details) which should provide an overview of the system. This should be followed by a demonstration of the key features of the system and a brief Q&A Video Overview A 2-3 minute video overview of your working system should be recorded and played at the start of your demonstration. This video should also either be embedded in your final blog post in GCU Learn or made available via a link in your final blog post to a video hosting website e.g. YouTube, Vimeo etc Blog You will document your work in a group blog available via GCU Learn. There should be a minimum of 5 blog posts (one per week from week 8 onwards). Each blog post should be a minimum of 300 words and should include the following where appropriate • Text descriptions • Images • Diagrams • References 3 The pre-recorded video should also either be embedded in your final blog post in GCU Learn or made available via a link in your final blog post to a video hosting website e.g. YouTube, Vimeo etc Attributes of a Networked AV System In developing a networked AV system you should be thinking about answering the following questions: • How extensively does the system use the network • E.g. there is a lot of data being transferred appropriately • What kind of data does the networked system handle • Control • Audio • Video • How novel is the system? How many sources have I drawn on? References in this instance could and probably will draw upon the work of others and yourself documented in forums, social media, previous courseworaqwks from other modules etc.
