Historical marker

The Texas State Historical Commission uses historical markers to memorialize many historically-significant people, places, and events in Texas. For this assignment, the student will select a person, place, or event and propose to the instructor a new historical marker for a site in Texas. The subject of the proposed marker should be appropriate for commemoration and the historical event, place, or person should relate to the course (U.S. History after 1877). The subject should not already be designated with a marker. Students can look on the Texas State Historical Commission website to see if a marker already designates certain sites/people/events/etc. The website is:

The project will be two – three pages. On the first page, the student should answer the following questions:

1. What/Who is the subject of your historical marker? How does the person, place, event
relate to the course content?
2. Where is the proposed location of your historical marker?
Address and city are required. Approximate addresses are acceptable. If an address is known, the student can provide it (especially when the marker is meant to designate a building). Otherwise, a suggested spot in a public park or two cross streets, along with the city, will work.

3. Are there other markers commemorating the subject or similar topics? If so, how is
your proposal different?

4. Who is the audience for the proposed historical marker? Who is likely to visit the site?

On the next page, the student is expected to write a narrative that summarizes the importance of the event, place, or person and the connection it/they have to the course content. This narrative should be about 300-500 words (this is about 1-2 pages; typed/completed on computer, double space, 12 point font). The narrative should be original content. Make sure to include a title for your historical marker!

Finally, the student should submit a works cited page and should cite information throughout using  Chicago Manual of Style or  Kate Turabian’s: A Manual for Writers of Term Papers, Theses, and Dissertation citation style manual formatting. If web-based articles or ebooks are used, the student should provide the full web address (not just the home page or search engine page that you used to find it).  The student is expected to use at least two primary sources and two secondary sources to complete the assignment. Secondary sources should be scholarly.
