Fascism
This is a response to a discussion that will be peer reviewed please write it as an individual replying:
Americans have typically believed that the United States is immune from extremist ideas like fascism, that it couldn’t happen here. However, in recent years, there has been a resurgence of far-right politics in Europe, and we have experienced this also in the United States. Many have tried to compare the current political environment in the U.S. with that of Weimar Germany, believing that the rise of an authoritarian leader, a fascist if you will, is possible in the U.S. Some have tried to compare Donald Trump’s populism with that of Adolf Hitler.
Now, before going any further, let me be clear that I am not saying that any individual or group are fascists or Nazis. This is purely an academic exercise.
With that said, we have looked at the rise of fascism and Nazism in Europe. Can a legitimate comparison be made between the current political and economic environment in the U.S. with that of Germany that allowed for the rise of Nazism? Is there any similarity in the populist appeal of Donald Trump and Adolf Hitler?
Let me reiterate, as always, this is meant to be an academic exercise comparing two historical periods. It is not an invitation for political tirades or to lambast the media or anyone/anything else.
