Paper details: The writers we are studying this week have received critical acclaim for their works.  Writers such as Richard Wright, James Baldwin, Ralph Ellison and Margaret Walker are among the many writers we are studying this term whose works you will probably want to spend more time with beyond the course.  Most certainly, you will want to read the novels, Native Son by Richard Wright, Invisible Man by Ralph Ellison, all of James Baldwin’s novels, short stories and essays, and Margaret Walker’s Jubilee as you develop your reading repertoire for the future.   However, in the limited time we have, this week, we are focusing our discussions on Richard Wright’s autobiographical sketch, “The Ethics of Living Jim Crow,” James Baldwin’s essay, “Notes of a Native Son, ” the Prologue from Ralph Ellison’s Invisible Man, and Margaret Walker’s poem, “For My People”.  Address the prompt below in an original post of at least 150 words.  Then offer replies to at least two of your classmates. Discussion Prompt Discuss how one of the week’s reading selections fits the literary definition of Realism, Naturalism and/or Modernism.   Use examples (i.e. quotations) from the text and from other scholarly sources to support your argument and points of discussion.  If you choose to discuss more than one of the reading selection, do so in a separate original post. Bonus Topic — Vernacular Tradition – Gospel and Sermons and Prayers Religion has always been central to the African American experience.  Since being brought to American soil in chains, the people have bolstered and sustained themselves with the faith, hope, and determination found in prayers, sermons and religious songs. For this week’s Bonus Topic, you will summarize, examine, and analyze an example of vernacular traditions of gospel music, sermons, and/or prayers.   You may submit an original post of at least 150 words. Bonus Discussion Prompt Choose one example of the vernacular tradition of Gospel music and/or Sermons and Prayers.  (You are not limited to those featured in the textbook). Present a summary of your example and discuss how the vernacular tradition you chose to analyze contributed to the Realism, Naturalism and Modernist Period and/or succeeding periods of history.
