The website contains some spurious correlations that are quite funny (e.g. Per capita cheese consumption & number of people who died by becoming entangled in their bedsheets (r = 0.95); anything involving Nicholas Cage). Once you have looked at some of those examples, choose three spurious correlations that are available in this dropbox folder Links to an external site. Be sure to save the unique dropbox for each of your three correlations and cite them properly in your paper (see below note on citation). After you’ve picked your three correlations, answer the following questions for EACH of the three correlations: Why is the relationship spurious? (That is to say, what factors contribute to these variables being spurious? Are there rival causal factors? Are there issues with the data or how it’s presented (raw vs normalized, etc), is it simply a function of time, or the result of an external event? How could these two variables be related? (Let’s pretend we’re the media and think that correlations DOES equal causation, what are some ways one of your variables could be related to the other? (Ridiculous theories are encouraged here). Choose one variable to be the independent variable and the other the dependent and paint me a fictional explanation on how it “could” be possible. It might be best to chose your variables based on this part of the prompt, rather than the first. Be sure to mention the strength and direction of association for each Correlation at some point. You do not need to include any pictures of the correlation graphs Make sure you find real world examples that could possible support the second part of the prompt, at least loosely speaking. If you’re making a claim that cheese consumption is causing people to murder others with steam, hot vapors, or hot objects, then find a source talking about increased cheese consumption. This means we’ll be using the title of the correlation.
